About Weft
Weft is born from a love of vintage clothing from the 1940s to 1970s. Military and vintage workwear that, in its day, was beautifully made.
In history clothes had a job to do and if a garment didn’t live up to what was expected then it didn’t sell. Folk didn’t have much money to spend on clothes, so garments would have to last. Machinery used to produce garments has changed over time, as has the quality of the materials. Sadly, that attitude towards quality and durability has been largely lost and replaced with cheap materials and construction. We live in such a throwaway society. I hope this can change.
I’ve always loved wearing clothes that take me back to a time I didn’t know. I blame my Grandad, who had impeccable taste as a man from the 1930’s. His clothes, growing up watching black and white ‘war’ films, the many comics such as Commando, all left a legacy with me. The big change came when I was on holiday and we visited a Sunday market. I was 11, and whilst wandering around I spotted two men wearing RAF sheepskin jackets and Brylcreem in their hair. I was gobsmacked. I went to the shop to buy Brylcreem - which didn’t work for me - but the desire to find old clothes did!
Over the years I’ve learnt ‘you have to buy the real thing’ not something portraying elements of vintage items, or a reproduction. If it wasn’t real it’d linger in a draw or cupboard and sadly make its way to a charity shop or eBay.
If you’re like me you’ll appreciate the many differences, and feel proud to wear these clothes!
Over the last couple of years we have had a pop-up store at Friendly Records and a concession store in Patina. We will be selling online only from 11th October 2020.
